The simple idea behind any musical instrument is to manipulate the pitch and speed of sound to make music. If the argument is that DJs only rearrange sounds and speed of a record, you're absolutely right. But consider that any instrument rearranges notes at varying speed to do the same thing.

Djs that simply play and mix tunes together arnt really being musicians but a dj that reorganizes and rearanges music, or uses them to scratch are being musicians

I agree with you. Someone here said that a DJ was more skilled than a pianist... A pianist can play two different time signatures at the same time and they play harmony, rhythm and melody at the same time... Listen to some Keith Jarrett for instance.

...don't get me wrong, there are some DJs that are musicians, and brilliant ones at that. In fact, I would imagine being a good 'musician' helps enormously to become a good DJ. But, being a DJ doesn't qualify as being a musician, so could it be said that turntables are not essentially musical instruments?

I think that DJs re-organise other peoples sounds to make new sounds, they don't essentially 'create' music. A good DJ can 'use' turntables 'musically', but, despite their skills of judging what fits well and being fluid in their control of technology, I would be pushed to call a DJ a 'musician'. Most people could 'bluff' being a DJ given some time, I've been playing the trumpet for 20 years and you couldn't fool anyone that you were accomplished on that or any other musical instrument.

Turntables originally were not made to be instruments, but they turned into them.

Oh and if you mean someone who just goes to a party and puts on music other people made. Then I have to say: Hell no.

It depends on what they do with the turn tables. DJs like C-Mon & Kypski or the Avalanches definetly use the turntables as musical instruments. But DJs like DJ Tiesto, hardly do.

i dont think it should. it has nothing to do with knowing chord changes or notes or keys or octaves or anything else it takes to be able to play a real instrument. yet i guess it does take some skill with rythym. i guess you could classify it as a percussion instrument.
