This is not exactly Rachmaninov. Piano roll destroys music worse than the hissing on Long players.

thats interesting that he would say that i think he was just being modest, there are other great versions of this piece but he plays them so unique and passionate... its great to be able to hear him

Rachmaninoff's interpretations of his own pieces are simply AUTHORITATIVE, simply because it's HIM. The B (middle) section is quite beautiful, but I like the overall mysterious atmosphere (same with the Gilel's video), though this is not a good video quality.

Rachmaninoff always had said that other people played his pieces better than he himself did. I read somewhere that he was so shy that people had to push him onto the stage :P But yet he is probably THE greatest pianist during the Romantic era!

Yes, I remember listening to this ages ago and it just sounds like a Piano Roll. It is completely accurate and he played everything he intended to however the rhythm is not steady and certainly not as steady as the live recordings. Think about it.
