Description: This is the part of a series of short videos illustrating various aspects of Australian Rules Football. Tackling in Aussie Rules is quite difficult to do legally. You can only tackle a player in possession of the ball between their hips and shoulders and do so without pushing them in the back. Tackling above the shoulders is illegal for obvious reasons while below the hips is illegal as it could result in tripping a player. This has resulted in some nasty knee injuries and broken legs to players over the years. The tackled player must then dispose of the ball in a legal manner, ie with a handball or kick. If he does not do this then the tackling player receives a free kick. Also of interest is the smother the Carlton player applies to the opponents kick prior to the first tackle.
