Wonderful! How I would have loved to hear this giant (small stature notwithstanding) at the height of his powers. Someone please invent a time machine and take me back to 1920's or 30's when pianists were poets instead of scholars! Hofmann, Rachmaninoff, Lhevinne, Moisivitch, Schnabel, those were the days!!

As for me, in hands of Gileles it sounds at least clearly

I like how he plays this with such dynamics! Whoa! Very, very nice! I love the way he plays; with authority! BRAVO! So awesome! I never heard it like this before. I really like it (obviously) :0/ ^o^

The greatest piano-tone-production I've ever heard aside....This is pathetique compared to Rachmaninoff's playing of the same. Here is pure primal power played like a machine, steamrolling through every lyrical nuance. With Rachmaninoff the structure was teased deliciously to create an anticipation & fulfillment that buries this in the sand for all eternity. I didn't encode it myself. A friend gave me this video and it was already off sync when I watched it the first time. Still, I thought this video was worth uploading, since it's a quite rare video.

What a genius Hofmann was! Schoenberg was right in calling Hofmann's detractors "old maid critics". Rachmaninoff himself said Hofmann was the greatest of them all.
